Final Adepticon 2010 Review, Championships Results

March 31st, 2010 No comments

Adepticon is over now and I’ve made the 11 hour drive back plus a nice full day to unwind.  Overall, Adepticon was an absolute blast.  It was amazing to see how many people were there, literally in the thousand plus.  Here’s my overall thoughts.

Swag – Lots of stuff.  For the price of admission ($25) there were three black library books, one of which was a hardback Courage and Honour, and one was an unreleased novel we got early.  There were a couple decent miniatures and some not so decent.  Armorcast included a package of cinematic effects.  There were several different bases.  Discounts for online stores. Sabol Designs included a fortune cookie that gave you a chance to win something at their booth.  That turned out to be a big mistake because the changes to win were more than they expected.  You basically turn in your fortune for a change to pick a number and roll 2d6.  If you got the same number you won $100 worth of stuff.  I didn’t go try until the second day.  By the time I got there they were in very bad moods.  Turns out a lot of cookies had 3 or more fortunes in them, and a lot of people were winning.  They may have given away more than they sold.

Vendors – There were plenty of vendors there.  But in some sense I was still a bit disappointed.  Three or so online based stores where there selling some stuff at normal to 10% off and usually were also selling sprues from various box sets.  Battle foam went all out with a mascot running around, giving t-shirts away, and combined with the 40K radio guys, they had the largest display.  IMG_0350

While Gale Force 9 was giving some small demo’s on Flames of War, they were not actually selling anything.  I looked all over the convention and not one intro box set and I was pretty disappointed.  However I quickly forgot about it when I got to the Mantic booth.  They had put some sprues in the swag as well.  They are a new line of minatures that are fantasy themed.  One of the guys from Mantic was helping me pack swag before the convention and we chatted a bit about how he left Games Workshop and was recruited by Mantic.  These miniatures are great and evil looking.  I got a huge deal for a regiment of 60 undead ghouls and skeletons from the guys at Mantic.

DSC03018I found in general this was the best kind of shopping.  Where you can actually talk people down to your price.  Felt like I was back in India at a market place.  Over at Armorcast, I was checking out their terrain pieces and their new awesome new 3d tiles that can be used for Space Hulk on the last day.  I talked them down on several packages of trenches to fill up one side of a table for almost half off since I was buying in quantity and they wouldn’t have to take it home with them.  Vendors don’t like to have to lug stuff back home which is why everything is cheap on the last day.

Warhammer 40k Championships – What a fun time I had at the championships.  And I had a pretty good run at it too.  Here’s a brief overview of my three rounds at the tournament.

Round 1:  Chaos Daemons VS Eldar, Standard Kill Point Mission

DSC03015This opponent was running the standard Eldrad, but it was not an Eldrad and Seer Council.  Instead Eldrad and one warlock were in a large unit of Wraithguard.  He also had a large unit of Scorpions with Krandras.  This was by far my most fun game of the day.  The guy was super nice although still being into the game (he wore mirrored sunglasses like it was poker).  He did however make a mistake by placing only Eldrad and the Wraithgruard in and keeping the rest in reserves.  I managed to land both units of flamers on opposite sides of the terrain he was hiding in and toasted him early on.  Everything else came in piecemeal only to be destroyed.  Here’s what it looked like in Turn 3, do you see any hope for a comeback?  I ended up scoring all but 4 points worth of bonus tatical points.

Round 2:  Chaos Daemons VS Eldar (again), Capture Terrain Elements, Dawn of War

DSC03017 This was a tougher game against a smarter opponent.  He ran a more standard list.  Eldrad in a unit of Gardians.  3 Fire Prisms and the Avatar.  He was also very annoying though, talking all through my turn about nothing to do with the game.  After a while it was starting to feel like he was stalling me and twice I forgot to either deep strike somebody or make a shot.  At first we spent several turns fighting over the center terrain piece which he was holding with deployed troops.  Then we both were taking elements on our sides while trying to shoot troops out of the other side.  In order to capture terrain you needed to have the whole unit in the terrain.  He made the mistake of not reading the rules and had a couple models hanging out in order to keep the unit from charge distance from my blood crushers.  I won the Primary Objective, but he won the secondary in that he managed to kill both my HQ’s.  Points wise it was a draw favoring me by a couple.

Round 3:  Chaos Daemons VS Space Wolves, 3 Objectives

Another very nice guy to play against at first.  However he really started to get bummed out at the game went on.  Seems people seem to think the best tactic to deal with an all deep striking list is by putting everything in reserves.  Turn 1 he put nothing on the board.  I managed to land everything and run to prime spots to wait for him to walk in.  His reserves killed him and again things came in piecemeal that I had half my army able to focus on one thing at a time.  I was really feeling bad for him.  He actually gave up on turn 5, conceded the game and went home.

I ended the tournament a major victory, draw, major victory.  I don’t know where I placed among the 250+ people playing in the tournament, I’m still waiting for results to be posted.

Here a some photos of some of the armies at the Championships.

Combat Patrol Round 3 and some Misc Adepticon Pictures

March 26th, 2010 No comments

Round 3 I played another IG army.  This was built a bit differently.  2 chimeras with veterans, 2 Sentinels.  My opponent had a day pretty much like mine.  Great first round, hammered on the second.  This was a very interesting scenario as well.  You actually choose your objective out of three choices, with three different deployments.  After choosing, you and your opponent share and then proceed with set up.  It actually allowed for some people to have deployment zones that overlapped.  But it was fun non the less.

I choose for my objective to have at least one scoring unit entirely within his deployment zone.  He choose the objective where he needed to destroy my most expensive unit (flamers).  On paper, it works out in his favor because it’s not hard to kill 3 flamers with a mass of IG guns.  However I won initiative and gave him first turn, stuck my targeted flamers in the second wave and due to the luck of the dice gods, for better or for worse, they didn’t come in until turn 5!

The first turn wasted, second turn had me immobilize a chimera when I deep struck and my other flamers went way off target again.  He managed to kill the flamers on turn two by pumping just about all his shots into them, including disembarking the troops to get rapid fire from the other Chimera.  On the third turn, I shot some of the troops up with the pinks, and then he pumped fire in the rest of the pinks killing them.  Turn 4 was a dud as I had nothing on the table.  Turn 5 my other pink horrors and his objective flamers came onto the table.  I rolled horribly and didn’t kill any more Chimera’s.  He ran his Chimera up, unloaded the guys and choose to split fire at my pinks and the flamers.  He missed all the pink horrors and only killed one flamer.  He then charge the flamers and became tar pitted until the last turn.  On turn 6 I snuck the pinks just on the edge of the board behind a terrain piece where only half his army could see and got my objective.  Final assault phase had the veterans kill the lone flamer and he got his objective.  He got a couple extra points for bonus items, but in the end we drew and badly hurt both our standings.  Out of 70 players I was dead middle of the pack at around 36.  Blah…..

Below are some pictures I took so far.

Thursday, I helped do set up.  Met some great folks on the Adepticon staff, got to watch them in action and talk with them about the organization of a large tournament like this.  I helped set up the tables and terrain for the main 40k and Gladiator hall, organized flyers and stuffed the swag bags.  We had a pizza party mid day for everybody helping out.

I picked up some great ideas for our own tournaments.  And some great idea’s for running a combat patrol tournament.

Last month was a very good tournament.  Lots of new people came out and yet nobody play Tyranids!  Ryan doesn’t count….  The increase made for a very nice prize and bonus to folks.  Let’s pack the house with this one since I’m going to be going to Adepticon next month and will miss the tournament in March.  :(

Games Day 2010

November 4th, 2009 2 comments

Games Workshop has announced the date and logistics around the one and ONLY ONE games day event in North America in 2010.  With there being only one event that GW will be pouring their efforts into, it this the one worth travelling and getting tickets early for?

Over the last few years Games Workshop has endeavored to be more attentive to the needs and suggestions of you the individual hobbyist as well as the hobby community as a whole. Despite reports to the contrary, we do hear you, although we may not be able to react as quickly as many would like. We are always striving to put forth a better quality product, event or tournament and your input has driven many of these changes.

In the past we have had as many as five Games Days taking place over a calendar year across the continent and have scaled back since then to down to three. This was done to consolidate resources in an attempt to put forth an event that was “Epic” in scope and truly the culmination of the hobby experience in North America.

We have received input from hobbyists, clubs, and attending parents as well as from many parts of our own business on things that need to change or improve to make your Games Day experience a truly memorable one.

To achieve this goal we are redesigning the template for the Games Day experience and while we are keeping the time honored traditional bits that work as they are, we will be improving and updating many areas as well as adding new and exciting features. We have also made the difficult decision to only have one Games Day in 2010, which will be held in Baltimore on August 21, allowing us to focus our energy into one amazing event.

So please come and join us in Baltimore, Maryland on August 21st for North America’s GAMES DAY 2010! Keep visiting the website for updates on events, guests, and how you can make a difference in your hobby!

Make sure you bring your armies with you to the most interactive GAMESDAY ever!

Tickets will be available online only starting November 27th 2009 for $25! We are limiting the number of tickets this year and they WILL NOT be available at the door so get yours NOW!

Halloween Warhammer 40K Zombie Fest!!!

October 6th, 2009 No comments

ZombieFest

The valuable Imperial hive world of Romero V has been the site of a vicious conflict for a decade, with different races vying for control. The Nurgle Lord Typhus had enough and released the Plague of Unbelief, turning the majority of the human populace and alien invaders into mindless zombies. Through a dark ritual he has also shrouded the planet in a warp storm that has made communication extremely difficult, psychic or other wise. The survivors, human and xeno, have been running for their lives and searching for a way off the planet. The opportunity for that has just arisen.

A shuttle making a last run to recover some important data has set down in the zombie infested hive Primus. Through intercepted transmissions the surviving military units have learned that the shuttle will be stuck planetside until some repairs are made. The units also learn that the Inquisition has declared the planet lost and ordered Exterminatus. This Shuttle is the last means of getting of this planet of the damned. The options are clear, fight through a city of undead or lie down and die. Which option will you choose?
