Halloween is over now (sad face).  But leading up to it we had some great fun at our local store and played zombie apocalypse game.

The valuable Imperial hive world of Romero VI has been the site of a vicious conflict for a decade, with different races vying for control. The Nurgle Lord Typhus had enough and released the Plague of Unbelief, turning the majority of the human populace and alien invaders into mindless zombies. Through a dark ritual he has also shrouded the planet in a powerful warp storm that has made communication extremely difficult and psychic powers useless. The survivors, human and xeno, have been running for their lives and searching for a way off the planet. The opportunity for that has just arisen. An Imperial shuttle making a last run to recover some important data has set down in the zombie infested hive Primus. Through intercepted transmissions the surviving military units have learned that the shuttle will be stuck planet side until some repairs are made. The units also learn that the Inquisition has declared the planet lost and ordered Exterminatus. This Shuttle is the last means of getting off this planet of the damned. The options are clear, fight through a city of undead or lie down and die. Which option will you choose?

Tournament Missions

Aug 102010

40K Tournament 2

Shaking things up, the next club day will instead be a Team Tournament with randomized pairings.  Games will be played in typical tournament format.  3 games, top seeds playing for 1st.  Missions will also be something different, geared to team format.

Location: Parker Banner Kent Wayne, 8301 Magnolia Estates Dr, Cornelius, NC 28031
Entry Fee: 10.00

Army composition is per standard force organizational chart per person (not team)
Army Size, each person will need a 1000 point army

Rules clarifications

  • Transports cannot carry models from a teammate.
  • Army wide abilities that are “Chapter Tactics” or affect “Your Army” such as Vulcan’s ability to reroll melta shots do not confer to a teammate. (They aren’t part of your army after all)
  • Abilities that target or benefit “Friendly Models” such as Pedro Kantor’s Inspiring Presence ability will confer to your team mate.
  • Independent Characters cannot join units from your teammates army.
  • You can’t shoot your teammate.  No matter how funny it would be.

Team Tournament Hints/Tactics

  • You do not need to load up on troops.  Since each army needs a typical 2 troop choices, there will be a guaranteed minimum of 4 troops per team.
  • Watch out for “Your Army” vs. “Friendly Units” wording.  Post here if you have a question about any rule.
  • Chaos marines and Chaos Daemons both have “Chaos Icons” and can be used between teammates if you are lucky to be paired together.
  • Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.  If you plan a horde army it does not play well with a gun line blast marker firing army.  You’ll shoot your own guys.
If you have other questions about rules or want to share some tactics help, please post in the forum.

With Ard Boyz season upon us we are faced with an opportunity to play a certain style of 40K that we might not otherwise spend time preparing for. And that; is high points games.  A high point game is anything in my mind that is OVER 2000pts per side, some might disagree, but that’s my opinion. And when it comes to playing big games there are things that you have to think about that might not be a factor in lower point battles. So here are the meat and potatoes of this article…advice for playing large games of 40K. This list isn’t completely comprehensive, but these are just some things that I have noticed as being reason some people win and others loose. And as a point of clarification I am going to focus specifically on the Ard Boyz Tournament.

1) Know your rules and come prepared to defend and disagree.

This might seem like something that some people just can’t bring themselves to do. When your opponent says he has line of sight, you say “ok” and don’t disagree because you don’t like to cause trouble. Or when he moves his units he gives them an extra inch of movement and you let it slide. Maybe he modeled his marines with flamers but then said that they count as meltas, I mean he paid the points for them, he just forgot to change the typo in his list. If you let this stuff slide you will not win at Ard Boyz. O, you might win your battle, and I personally find that people who stoop to this kind of level typically don’t do well against seasoned veterans, but you might not get the kind of victory that you are going to need in order to place top 3 and that’s what matters. 3 minor victories are typically not going to cut it. You have to understand the mentality and mindset of the Ard Boyz player. You don’t play in a tournament of this caliber for fun, you just don’t. You play in it to test your skills and army against the best of the best. Ask an Olympian why he/she competes in the Olympics, I guarantee there are not going to say, “well I had nothing else to do today…”. The best way to stop this is to KNOW YOUR RULES and sometimes others rules too. Bring a rule book with you and a copy of the rules for that specific tournament, tab special areas that you think might cause issues for quick reference during a match. Don’t feel like a jerk for saying, “well right here it specifically says WYSIWYG, or What You See Is What You Get, so sorry buddy but you cant proxy an Ork Battle Wagon with that remote control car” its not about hurting feelings its about playing by the rules. Bring a laser pointer! I cant tell you how quick I solve Line of sight issues with my 10$ laser pointer. I’m not saying don’t try and have fun, I am just saying you need to understand what your getting yourself into and how to be prepared.

 2) Don’t waste points.

Just because the points cap is high, doesn’t mean you should run all the special characters you own and upgrade every unit just because you can.  Just like in a smaller game every piece of your 40K army puzzle is going to play a part in your army and if that unit is over priced in a small game then chances are its going to be over priced in a large game as well. This ties into evaluation of a unit and a million other topics, but the long and short of it is this…. If you wouldn’t consider using it in a 1850pts game…then think twice before putting it into your 2500pt list, just because its flashy and you CAN spend the points on it doesn’t mean you should.

 3) Know the scenarios and plan accordingly.

I plan my Ard Boyz lists out way in advance, but I don’t put anything down as an actual hard copy until I see the scenarios. This year is a great example of that. The scenarios hit certain builds hard and if you were one of those armies and you refused to change things up just because you did well last year…..you might do well, and you might be in for a surprise. Be flexible and fluid. Don’t get discouraged if you see the missions for the first time and cry a bit, just go back to the drawing board and plan accordingly. Think ahead of time (and run practice games with your buddies if you can) of the scenarios. Don’t let a mission catch you with your pants down if you have the option of being prepared.

Large games can be fun and rewarding, and for most of us its not everyday we get to field so much of our stuff at the same time. But don’t let the hype and hysteria overtake your tried and true battle wisdom. Play smart, play hard and be prepared, because that’s what it means to be an Ard Boy.

One of the things every army needs for a large tournament such as Adepticon is a display board.  This is a tray that will hold your figures and serves two purposes.  First it goes into judging of the paint scheme.  Second it will be used to quickly move your figures from one table to the next, as opposed to sticking them in and out of their foam cases.

My first step in going about this process was to think about framing.  There was an old GW article that provided some pretty detailed steps on making a display board.  Thy suggested using a basic picture frame.  I wanted a more detailed frame with scroll work or something ornate.  Unfortunately those can get expensive.  I decided instead to make my own frame our of molding which you can get even detailed molding for $10 at the home improvement store.

For backing, the GW article suggested using foam board on top of the normal picture frame backing with slats of some kind to hole the base in against the frame since it has that lip and all and would stick out.  This seemed cumbersome to me.  Plus it wouldn’t work with my self built frame.  The foam board would be marked where the figures were to go and then holes cut out.  Good idea, but I did not want to be constrained to only one set force organization.  I wanted to be able to reuse my display board as often as I need.

Materials: Cost me in total around $30

  • Black Foam Board
  • Thin aluminum sheet metal
  • Hardboard
  • 8 ft detailed wall molding
  • Liquid Nails

First thing to do is decide the size of your frame.  Cut your molding at 45 degree angles such that the shorter length is on the inside of what your frame should look like.  When you have 4 equal lengths, or 2 sets of equal length boards, arrange them on the table or on one of the large foam boards to make sure your measurements are what you expected

InsertDepending on the thickness of the molding, you will need to know the measurements for the inside square and the outside perimeter.  My outside perimeter was 26.5 by 21.5.  The inside was 17 by 22.  Cut the foam board to those specifications.  What you are doing is making the backing and the insert.  Then using your liquid nails, glue the boards to the larger backing.  It should fit perfectly.  Make sure you glue the joints of the frame as well.

Let that dry for a few hours.  Then you should be able to place the insert foam board into the frame and it should be snug but not tight.  If it’s tight, shave the edges a bit.  The insert is going the be the piece that is cut specific to your formation.  You want that to be able to slide in and out so you can switch formations if needed.

When you have all these pieces you are are done with step one.  The next step, which will be posted later, will be to cut the holes and do the terrain for your insert.

On March 13th, we’re going to try something a bit different at PBKW and help out your local Second Harvest food bank at the same time.  We’re hosting a charity 40K tournament where your entry fee is paid in cans of food donated.  But we’re not going to stop there…oh no…  In addition, we’ve devised some rules to allow you to tip things in your favor during the course of your game (for a few more cans of food)…of course, your opponent can do the same thing, so you should stock up.  In all seriousness, this is a great way to help support your local community and enjoy a fun afternoon of some 40K to boot.  The full flyer is available at this link and details are below.  We hope to see you there!

Last month was a very good tournament.  Lots of new people came out and yet nobody play Tyranids!  Ryan doesn’t count….  The increase made for a very nice prize and bonus to folks.  Let’s pack the house with this one since I’m going to be going to Adepticon next month and will miss the tournament in March.  :(
