Assault Phase – Tournament Rules
Last Updated – 12/24/08
While gaming in general is meant to be fun affairs, tournaments, especially when there are prizes on the line, can create certain consternation. Here lies the most basic rules and points scoring for the 40K tournaments that we run. Rules can be changed at the event itself, in which case, there will be a notification of any rules changes before you punch in and game.
Army Lists:
- Armies are to be constructed using the standard Force Organization Chart (FOC) from the relevant Codex. Total points cost may not exceed the points cap given for the tournament by any amount.
- Only official games workshop codex can be used to built your army. No internet rules or Forgeworld rules.
- Individual units that may have multiple rules versions will follow the rules presented in that army’s codex.
- You must provide access to your own rules (which include the actual Codex used for your army and the current FAQ), dice, templates, pen/pencil, calculator, or anything else you’ll need during the course of regular play.
- All lists must be clearly defined and legible with itemized and total points costs and will be checked for legality before games start.
- Army lists are not private. You may ask to see an opponent’s army list prior to the beginning of the game. Players are encouraged to bring extra army list copies to give to opponents.
- What you see is what you get (WYSIWYG): Models need to be armed as they are used. No substitutions or proxies for optional war gear. Exceptions to this are small items like bolt pistols, grenades, Tyranid non-weapon biomorphs, and basic equipment the entire unit is assumed to have as standard. An example of this is the standard Chaos Space Marine who is assumed to have a Bolter, a Bolt Pistol, and a CCW as standard…these can be modeled in any combination of Bolter or BP/CCW, but if one has a flamer it may not be a counts-as meltagun or plasma gun.
- Terrain: All terrain used will fit into the standard 4+ cover save category. Any terrain features with a base will be considered to extend to the edge of the base. City/Desert Ruins, Rock Spires, and tank barriers are impassible to vehicles. Rock Spires are impassible to non-jump infantry.
- Kill points: There are a few ambiguities in the book pertaining to what counts as a kill point and can/can’t contest objectives…these rules will be in effect until official clarification from Games Workshop is made available. Tyranid spore mines fired from biovores will not count as units, they are ammo and nothing more, however if purchased as a fast attack brood, the mines are a unit as normal. Tau detachable vehicle gun drones are both a unit and a KP once detached from the parent vehicle, and may contest objectives.
Tournament Scoring System
Three rounds will usually be played during the tournament. Each round will consist of different game types and objectives. Additional rules and scoring may be posted prior to the event in the forums.
